Penncrest Loses a Tough One

By Stephen Larkin
MEDIA - The Season opener for our Lions came against a tough Ches-Mont opponent in Downingotwn. The game proved to be a real barn burner with 4 lead changes in the second half. Both teams produced over 500 yards of total offense. It was coach Milano’s home coming and he gave the Lions a game to remember.

Downingtown opened the scoring with a 57 yard pass from Bret Gillespie to Lewis Smith however, the kick was no good. Penncrest followed up less than 4 minutes later with an 18 yard pass from Matt Atkinson to Jerry "Hammer" Boyer. Atkinson ran the ball in for the two point conversion. Penncrest scored again less than 5 minutes later on a 66 yard pass reception by Matt Bundy. Hammer converted the extra point for two, wrapping up the scoring in the first quarter.

Opening the second quarter, the Whippets scored twice on a 15 yard run and a 15 yard pass. The Lions recovered with a drive culminating in a Boyer 55 yard run and a Tom Weathers kick. Downingtown was not done and added another touchdown on a 9 yard run by Kessan Christopher. The half ended with Downingtown up by a score of 26-23.

Penncrest scored the only touchdown in the third quarter on another Hammer 9 yard run and Weathers kick, to take a 30-26 lead. Downingtown scored early on a 2 yard run by Gillespie to open the 4th quarter. Penncrest drove down to the 1 yard line where Brandon Jacquette recovered a fumble for the go ahead score.

Penncrest had to hold on for the last few minutes and they could seal the victory. Penncrest had Downingtown in 4th and long when Adam Yee managed to pressure Gillespie, but not enough. Gillespie found Smith for a 54 yard touchdown. The Lions were down but now out and they had been here before. Most of the fans believed that they had plenty of time to score. In fact, Atkinson put a great drive together with passes of 14 yards to Phil Barbieri and 22 to Bundy. Penncrest drove to the twelve yard line with less than a minute to go. It was not to be this time, as Atkinson’s pass was intercepted inside the 1 yard line sealing the lions fate.

This is not the end but the beginning and Central League play gets underway Friday against a 1-0 Radonr team. We will find out how our Lions respond.
